cooking on the barbbie

Just very new at this. Do I need briquettes for my new gas barbbie? It has a heat shield, & when I put the ceramic bricks on the q it didn't heat up? So I took them off and then I was just cooking with the flame.

If there is a flame - and it is a gas q - you don't need briquettes.
