The health benefits are the same; brown sugar is just granulated sugar with molasses added.

Hello Spunky,

Sugar is sugar as far as health benefits go. Brown sugar and white sugar can be used interchangeably in equal amounts. However, they each have their own flavors and texture qualities. Brown sugar is sugar with added molasses. When used in baked goods it produces a softer texture and richer flavor. White sugar will sweeten a food, but for instance in a cookie, will make the cookie crispier.

If you are looking for a more health conscious alternative to sugar then there are several sugar substitutes on the market. Splenda, which is an artificial sugar product, offers Splenda Sugar Blends which are used for baking. There is even a natural product called Agave Nectar which can be found at health food stores and even on the sugar aisle at your grocery store. I personally have never used it. Most sugar substitutes will give you a conversion chart right on the product for your measurements.
