meatloaf and bread slices

I had a meatloaf that was delicious at my friends house and instead of using bread crumbs or cracker crumbs she used bread slices under the meatloaf in the pan. it was delicious... oh yeah, i already said that. the question is...
does anyone know when meatloaf was first thought up and written down, and did they use bread slices too?

Back in medieval times tough meats were minced to make it easier to eat. For quite some time many shied away from minced meats because they didn't know what was in it. They were afraid of it.

As time goes by, meal-stretching starts - adding bread crumbs, oatmeal, veggies, etc. to allow more to enjoy the meal or when times were rough.

I still make meatballs/meatloaf the way my ancestors did - hold the bread under running water, squeeze the water out and break up to add to the meat. Sometimes I use bread crumbs - sometimes I use the bread. Both taste great.
