stupid question
I know the tagline for this thread is there's no stupid questions, but i still feel like this is one. I bought some steaks the other day and unfortunately didn't read the cooking instructions when i bought it. Took it home only to find out i can only cook it 2 ways and i can't do either. Method 1 is grilling(i don't own a bbq), and method 2 is fry pan(i can't cook anything that produces a lot of smoke like steaks and a few other meats as my hood fan is broken and i can't afford to replace it at the moment and smoke sets off my smoke detector). Ive written to the company that makes this product 3 times about alternate methods of cooking and have been ignored 3 times...modern day customer service at it's finest.
Is there some way to cook this stuff by broiling? microwave or oven method using some chart to convert times/temps like i do now? I use one atm as i own an old 800 watt nuker and have to convert times from products that estimate cooking times based on 1000w or 1200w microwaves.

Re: stupid question
there is no such thing as a stupid question -
BUT I am going to ask one -
just what kind of steak did you purchase?
I haven't met a steak that won't do well in an oven or an electric fry pan!- Check out my new blog: http://mamassecretrecipes.com

Re: stupid question
They're called "Bacon wrapped beef sirloin rounds". What i didn't want to add is that this is the 2nd time i've done this lol. I still have these Tandoori chicken breasts from the same company and the same conditions for cooking that are sitting in my freezer for the last 4 months. I have GOT to start paying more attention to packaging to avoid this in the future. fyi, an electric fry pan won't work as i don't own one
.

Re: stupid question
if you can tell us the weight of the meat and shape, sounds kinda funny but that will help us identify how to cook it. i would suggest i possible to just sear the meat in frying pay and then use the oven to cook it out, that will leave you with a nice colour.

Re: stupid question
Ok - here you go - this will work - it will give you a good idea -
I would melt a bit of butter (possibly half butter and half olive oil) in skillet, sear on both sides (which takes just a moment if you get your pan hot enough), transfer to baking dish and bake at 375 to desired doneness.
Or just place in a baking dish and cook at 375 - 400 until done to desired doneness.
As far as your chicken goes - I would roast that in the oven as well.
I hope this helps.

Re: stupid question
er...I wouldn't use olive oil to sear in a pan "hot enough", coz it will smoke. Use canola oil.
Also, if your smoke alarm is going off too easy and too often, its because its old and needs to be replaced. This is normal mantainance for landlords.

Re: stupid question
Well i went ahead and tried to cook the steaks. I preheated @400 and started by using their method of 15 per side as a guideline and they were still a bit raw so i sliced 1 up and added another 8/8. the one i sliced up to check was actually med-well which i like the other turned out a tad medium. bit too much redish-pink still showing but was good enough. No tummy aches or food poisoning so it ended well lol . As for the chicken, i buy other types of chicken breasts that are about the same size and shape so i'll use those as my guideline and apply the same times. I don't see that failing on me. I hates cooking(i knpw that's blasphemy on a cooking forum)
thnx for all your ideas folks, much appreciated.

You're very welcomed! Maybe a meat thermometer would be a good investment - it will help you alot!
