OTTAWA, July 19, 2007 ? The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Abbott Nutrition are advising consumers across Canada to check 900-gram Similac Advance Step 2 powdered infant formula cans for the presence of a false, over-stickered lot number and expiration date.

Abbott applies the expiration date and lot number information directly onto the bottom of its cans in ink ? and does not use stickers for this purpose (please see pictures below).

HEALTH HAZARD ALERT
CERTAIN SOFT SHELL CLAMS SOLD IN SOUTHWESTERN NEW BRUNSWICK MAY CONTAIN PARALYTIC SHELLFISH TOXIN

OTTAWA, August 1, 2007 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is advising the public not to consume certain softshell clams harvested and sold in Southwestern, New Brunswick. These clams described below contain paralytic shellfish toxins that can cause illness if consumed.

The frozen softshell clams found to contain elevated levels of paralytic shellfish toxin were sold from July 21 to 31 inclusive by Monty?s Seafood, Pocologan, New Brunswick. These clams may have been sold in Pocologan and Fundy costal areas in Southwestern New Brunswick.

There have been no reported cases of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) associated with the consumption of these clams.

Consumers are also advised that the levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP or red tide) are currently high in the entire southwestern area of New Brunswick and this area is now closed to harvesting bivalve shellfish due to unacceptable PSP levels. It is illegal to harvest shellfish from contaminated areas. Proper documentation must accompany commercially harvested shellfish to demonstrate that it has been harvested legally and inspected appropriately.

Consumers are advised to exercise caution when purchasing shellfish in Southwestern New Brunswick. Consumers can inquire at the point of purchase if the shellfish they are buying has proper documentation to ensure that it was harvested from an approved or open area.

For more information on closure of shellfish harvesting in Southwestern New Brunswick, please refer to Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) website at the following address: Media Room - News Releases - 2007

Paralytic shellfish toxins are a group of natural toxins that sometimes accumulate in bivalve shellfish that include oysters, clams, scallops, mussels and cockles. Non-bivalve shellfish, such as whelks, can also accumulate PSP toxins. These toxins can cause PSP if consumed. Symptoms of PSP include tingling and numbness of the lips, tongue, hands and feet, and difficulty swallowing. In severe situations, this can proceed to difficulty walking, muscle paralysis, respiratory paralysis and death in as quickly as 12 hours.

For more information, consumers and industry can call the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342 / TTY 1-800-465-7735 (8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday to Friday).

The food safety fact sheet on Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) can be viewed at: Canadian Food Inspection Agency - Fact Sheet - Red Tide, PSP and Safe Shellfish Harvesting.

For information on receiving recalls by e-mail, or for other food safety facts, visit our web site at Government of Canada - Canadian Food Inspection Agency / Gouvernement du Canada - Agence canadienne d'inspection des aliments.
