Default Newby says "Hi!" How do you do a tri-tip?

I have to be honest. I purchased by BBQ-Pit well ove a year ago. Tried one thing (don't remember what), was disappointed and it has been sitting in the garage ever since. We are now talking about returning it to Costco. Before doing that, I thought I would give it one more try.

I have a tri-tip I would like to try in it, but cannot find any recipes or informatoin on tri-tips in the Pit. The recipes I have found on this site seem to be the same ones that are in the recipe book that came with the unit.

Can anyone help with doing a tri-tip?

Thanks,

Larry

this one is easy if you would like to try it -

* 4 pounds tri-tip roast
* 1 teaspoon garlic powder
* 1 teaspoon onion powder
* 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
* 1 teaspoon salt

Lightly oil the cooking grate on your grill. Preheat grill and prepare for indirect grilling. Combine garlic powder, onion powder, pepper and salt. Rub it over the surface of the tri-tip roast. Place tri-tip on grill, fat side up. You can place a drip pan under it to catch the drips which will make a great gravy later. With the grill on low cook for about 4 hours or until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees.

and this one is a bit different -

1 beef tri-trip (bottom sirloin roast, approx. 2 lbs.)
2 tbsp. minced onion
1 tbsp. packed light brown sugar
2 tsp. bottled hot pepper sauce
1 tsp. chili powder
1/2 tsp. ground cumin
1/8 tsp. ground cinnamon
Salt to taste

Combine onion, brown sugar, hot pepper sauce, chili powder, cumin and cinnamon; spread evenly over surface of beef tri-tip roast. Place roast on grid over medium coals. Grill 30-35 minutes on open brazier (25-30 minutes in covered cooker), turning frequently. (Roast will be rare to medium in its doneness.) Remove roast from grill. Allow roast to "stand" tented with foil for 10 minutes for easier carving. Carve roast across the grain into thin slices. Makes 8 servings.
