While there are no specific laws that require you to dispose of your used syringes in any particular way, you may worry that they can harm the people who handle your trash. (Hospitals and medical clinics, on the other hand, are required by law to dispose of sharp medical waste in puncture-resistant containers.)
If you're concerned, most companies that make insulin syringes also make containers that allow you to dispose of them safely. These containers, however, are often expensive and hard to find. If you use insulin syringes, you can safely throw them away by putting them in a strong plastic container with a lid, such as a used milk bottle or an empty dishwashing or laundry detergent bottle. Make sure the lid is tight and won't come off.
People with blood-borne diseases such as hepatitis or HIV should be especially careful of how they get rid of their insulin syringes. Talk to your diabetes care team about what you can do to be safe.
