The medication glyburide can help get your blood glucose under control, but taking it, or other sulfonylureas, can cause weight gain.
These medications stimulate insulin release from the pancreas, which means you'll lose less blood glucose in your urine, and possibly gain weight. Also, high insulin levels in the bloodstream can stimulate your appetite and promote food storage as fat. If you're taking a sulfonylurea drug, you may feel hungrier and ultimately gain from 4 to 8 pounds.

If you gain a significant amount of weight, you may need a larger dose of medication to control your blood glucose. To avoid this problem, continue to follow your prescribed meal plan and exercise, and be alert for any increased appetite or subsequent weight gain. If you're concerned, give your doctor a call.
