When Muscle Aches Cramp Your Style ( Diabetes )

Muscle pain when you walk could be a symptom of poor circulation. If you have diabetes and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease such as high blood pressure, your doctor should evaluate the pain. You may have something called intermittent claudication, or poor blood flow.
Intermittent claudication feels like cramping or aching in your legs. You feel pain because the blood vessels leading to your lower legs have narrowed and the muscles are not getting enough blood. The pain usually occurs after you walk a short distance.

Your physician may recommend that you walk until you begin to feel pain, stop to rest, and walk some more. By gradually increasing the distance you walk, you can improve circulation to your legs, relieving the pain.

There could be other reasons why you feel leg pain. If you are out of condition and try to walk quickly, you may experience discomfort in your legs. Or, if you run or exercise vigorously, you can develop shin splints, or tendonitis on the front of your lower legs. Walk more slowly or do a different activity for a few days until the soreness goes away. If the pain is persistent, give your doctor a call.
