5 Fabulous Fads From The 1950's
If you were around in the 1950s, you probably remember the Korean War and McCarthyism. But that's not the fun stuff to visit on Memory Lane. It's much more fun to remember the fads, the crazes, and the pop culture sensations that emerged in an age when moms still made dinner every night and a car with fins could get you a date. The following is a list of some of the most decade-defining fads and trends of the 1950s. Don't get too excited, though -- nice boys and girls never do.
Poodle Skirts
Sock Hops
3-D Movies
The Conical Bra

going to the theater to see TWO movies with cartoons before each!
and Fizzies, Bosco, Teem, Veep, Hostess Lil Angels (orange or cherry), buying fries at McDonalds by the pound in those white lined bags, good birch beer, Ozzie and Harriet, Jiffy pop popcorn, the steering wheels that had the knob on them for turning (which were banned because that is how Sammy Davis Jr. lost his eye in a car accident), Jayne Mansfield, Pepsodent, Brylcream commercials,
remember having only ONE commercial during a half hour program???

Re: The "doo-wap" era -
Before 6pm movies were 14 cents. In addition to cartoons before the movies was a Newsreel. Frozen custard and popcorn with real butter in the theater. And it wasn't a problem to bring in your own treats. I even remember one theater in Chicago (Marbro) that had live stage shows between the movies for 25 cents. That's were I saw The Andrew Sisters.

Re: The "doo-wap" era -
I realized I made an error in my last posting. The theater that had live stage shows was not the Marbro, it was the Chicago Theater downtown.
Phone calls were made by talking to the operator who could listen in on your call just as whoever was on your party line. Pay phones cost 5 cents to call anywhere in the area.
The iceman and milkman made their regular rounds for deliveries. My job was to empty the drip pan for the ice box. If it overflowed (often) I had to wash the kitchen floor.
Our first TV had a round screen. Before we go it we used to listen to the big floor model radio and sit and stare at the lighted dial.
We never locked our doors or worried about it. The neighborhood grocery store would add up the purchases with a pencil on the paper bag. We could "put it in the book" and pay at the end of the week. The butcher always added free parsley to package of meat. He would rotate the liver (free) among his regular customers. I remember one time he wanted to give me the liver (which I hated, as most kids do) and I told him my mother didn't want it that day. When I got home, my mother told me to "march back to the store" and get the liver. He had called her to tell her I refused it.
Times were simpler for sure, but time marches on and there are many things I am grateful we have now, PC's for one.

Re: The "doo-wap" era -
Not only did we have a milkman, but we had the 101 man (he sold bleach in glass gallon jugs - that's it!), the vegetable cart, the Italian baker with all his cookies on a cart, the popcorn man who walked the streets for 12 hours a day, the man who drove around and sharpened scissors and knives, and the man with the truck with the merry-go-round on it - for a nickel you got a ride.
the operator always listened in! So did everyone on the party line!
yes - 5-cent phone calls -
I remember whem I went to the corner store with a penny to buy a stamp and had to go back home - they went up to 2 cents! my mom and gram swore to never mail anything again! LOL

Re: The "doo-wap" era -
You jogged my memory further. There was a junk man with a horse drawn wagon who came around calling out "Rags a lion". We called him the "rags a lion man". When I got older I realized he was calling ouy "Rags and old iron".
We also had a waffle man who would come around on Sunday in his cream and pale green colored wooden panel truck blowing his whistle. He make the best crispy waffles loaded with powdered sugar. A pack of 4 was 10 cents. When we heard the whistle I never had to ask, "Can we get waffles." My father would call me frantically to go get some waffles before the guy drove off.
We used to play baseball in the alley. If the ball went into Mrs. Iwicki's yard it was an automatic out because she would sit on her back porch and if the ball went in her yard she would run down and grab it never to be seen again. In her defense, she had a beautiful flower garden.

Re: The "doo-wap" era -
OMG! Yes - the waffle man - and his 4-packs! We had a rag man - but he passed and no one took his place - and of course - what about the Fuller Brush man! He was a regular as well.
We had a Mrs. Iwicki as well - balls were never found once they entered her TWILIGHT ZONE!
There were no dogs in the neighborhood - so dandelions were safe to pick and eat.
everyone knew everyone else - great days
