Joe’s Crab Shack(™) BBQ Crab Legs

Today I have a secret recipe from Joe’s Crab Shack.  This beach-themed seafood restaurant recently closed several locations across the country.  Lucky for us, we have some great secret recipes so you can enjoy your favorite Joe’s recipes at home.  The BBQ crab legs are first steamed, then covered in a tasty spice mixture and of course served with plenty of melted butter.

2 pounds snow crab legs
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1 teaspoon paprika
2 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning
4 teaspoons salt
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/2 stick of butter

In a large stock pot, bring a large amount of water to a boil.

Place the crab legs into the water and boil until opaque and flaky.

Remove the crab legs from the water and cut a slit into each of the leg shells.

In a small bowl, stir together the pepper, garlic salt, paprika, Old Bay seasoning, and salt.

Add the vegetable oil and stir well.

Brush the mixture onto the crab legs prior to serving.

Melt the 1/2 stick of butter and serve alongside the crab legs.

Hi, The seasoning sound yummy enough but I found it odd that a recipe called BBQ Crab Legs doesn’t have me going near the BBQ?

Where is the BBQ in this recipe? I just see instructions to boil the crab legs.

The seasoning blend adds a bbq flavor.

How long to boil? I keep finding comments anywhere from 5-10 minutes and I don’t want undercooked crab!

If you ever had the real deal, you’d know it’s not exactly BBQ sauce. It’s the seasoning that creates the “flavor.” You also don’t cook the legs on an actual grill but I am sure you could, or broil your legs (I prefer crab legs to be broiled and not boiled or steamed. too slimy for me)

Also, I always ordered the Dungeness crab, yum, so the crab can depend on your favorite crab leg.

Not true on that comment about bbq sauce being “just a flavor combo.” I worked there and they actually use special bbq sauce seasonings and flash fry the crab. This recipe is completely wrong. Old bay is only used on regular crab legs.
