Open Face Santa Fe Sandwiches

8 oz sausage cooked and drained
8 oz ground beef cooked and drained
1 (4-oz.) can diced green chiles
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup ketchup
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
6 buns split and toasted
12 thick slices Monterey Jack cheese

Preheat broiler. Combine sausage, beef, chiles, water, ketchup, chili powder, sugar and cumin in medium saucepan. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low; cook for 10 minutes. Cool slightly.

Spoon the meat mixture onto 12 halves of buns. Top with cheese. Broil for 3 to 5 minutes or until cheese is melted and lightly browned.
