Allergic to Your Meds? ( Diabetes )

If you’re allergic to sulfonamide-type medications like the antibiotic Bactrim, you may also be allergic to sulfonylurea medications, including glyburide, which is used to treat diabetes. Although cases of cross-reactivity — meaning that you actually develop an allergy from a sulfonylurea drug — are rare, you may need to change medications if you have a severe allergic reaction. Hives, breathing problems, or a rash shouldn’t be taken lightly. There are other medications that are just as effective that won’t cause an allergic reaction. Talk to your doctor to weigh the benefits and risks.
