Chinese Braised Eggplant?

Hello;

We went with friends to a non-local Chinese restaurant and had something called “Braised Eggplant”. It had a deep, almost meaty taste, although we did not see any meat in it; and it was also kind of smoky-tasting too. It was dark-colored.

This restaurant was more of a “home cooking” type of restaurant and definitely NOT at all like the popular American-Chinese Buffet-style fare.

This dish did not taste like it had any tomatoes in it.

Although it definitely tasted of soy and possibly black vinegar.

I have searched all of my cookbooks and cannot find anything even remotely close.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks in advance! :smiley:
