DEPRESSION BERRY, PEACH OR APPLE DUMPLINGS
Wen the imagination was depleted and there were some berries or fruit of any kind to be had, the following dish was put together and always a winner.
Make a pastry as for pie. Rool out and cut into squares. In a baking pan, bring to a boil 1 c. brown sugar and 1 c. water.
Fill squares with fruit and a bit of sugar. Fold edges together. Place in pan side by side. Bake about 40 minutes or until the crust is golden. Baste with the juice 4 or 5 times. If fruit is sour use more brown sugar.
Serve hot or cold with cream or with the juice only.
Another dessert was made using stale doughnuts. Slit in two and pour a white sugar butter sauce over while hot. Sometimes nutmeg was added.
