DEPRESSION ERA HOT CROSS BUNS

(an Old Swedish recipe)

There was little money for candy or even egg color, and this was imporvised, but Easter Sunday many a family had a version of this special once a year treat.

Combine:
1 1/2 c. milk, scalded
1/2 c. butter
1/3 c. sugar

Cool to lukewarm and add 1 cake of yeast dissolved in 1/4 c. lukewarm water.

Add:
1 t. salt
2 eggs, well beaten
2 c. flour

Beat until ight and bubbly.

Add:
1/3 c. raisins
1/3 c. citron, chopped
1/2 t. powdered cardamom
2 1/2 c. flour

Knead well; put in greased bowl and set in warm place to rise, Knead once, let rise until double in size; form into small rolls and let rise till light. Brush with melted butter. Cut cross through top with sharp knife. Bake 15 minutes. Brush with butter and sprinkle with sugar, or drizzle with thin powdered sugar icing.
