Matrimonial Cake (Date Cake)

Crust- 3/4 C soft shortening & butter
1 C brown sugar
Cream well together
Sift together and add to above
1 1/2 C flour sifted
1/2 tsp soda
1 tsp. salt
1 3/4 C rolled oats - stir into the above mixes
Place 2/3 of mixture in greased 9x13 pan. Press & flatten with hands or spoon to cover pan bottom. Spread with cooled filling.
Lastly cover with remaining 1/4 - 1/3 or crumb mixture.
Bake 400 degrees 25-30 minutes untill light brown.

Filling:
2 # dates- cut up
3/8 C sugar
2 1/4 C water
Cook together over low heat, simmer 20 minutes, stirring often. Cool.
Then spread over bottom crust and top with remaining crumbs.
(This was used at weddings and called the Groom’s Cake in yesteryear)
