6 c. each chicken and beef broth
1 t. five spice powder
1/2 c chopped mint
1/2 c chopped cilantro
1/2 c chopped serrano chilis (optional)
1/2 c chopped scallions
1/2 c rice noodles or rice
2 c chicken or beef (filet is best) cut in 1/2 inch cubes

Combine broths, rice, and spice powder and simmer until the rice is tender. Add chicken and/or beef and simmer a few minutes until done. Serve with a sprinkling of the herbs or put the herbs in little bowls and let your guests “build” their soup by the bowl or by the spoon.


36 oz. chicken broth
36 oz. beef broth
1 c. rice noodles
1 T. Five Spice Powder
8 oz. steak cubes
3 Serrano chilies ( or jalapenos)
1 c chopped fresh mint
1/2 c. chopped chives
1 c. chopped fresh cilantro
Juice of two limes

Simmer broth, steak and Five Spice Powder in large sauce pan. When steak is cooked (about 3-5 minutes) add noodles and cook briefly until tender.
Add lime juice. Serve family style with the herbs served along side in small dishes. Your friends and family can build their own bowl or even add the herbs in varying combinations spoon by spoon!
