Gadgets from the past

Guess everyone here has me thinking about kitchen gadgets!

Who remembers (or still has) the old metal french fry cutter. Ya know, that contraption you’d put a potato in, then press the handle down & perfectly sliced potato wedges would pop out the front? Do they still make those?

Also who still has or uses a food mill? Mine has to be 45 years old & is still in perfect condition. I’ve used it to make applesauce every year. I now have my mom’s also & hers has to be 60 years old & is also in perfect condition.

Anyone else remembering old type gadgets?

How about the Vege-o-matic. It was a glass jar with a metal rod through the middle of the jar lid. At the bottom of the rod, inside the jar was an “X” shaped blade. On the top of the rod, outside the jar was a flat knob and spring around the rod. You would add food to the jar, screw the lid on and push down on the rod to chop the food in the jar, the spring would pop the rod back up. You kept pushing down on the rod until the food was chopped. It might have been a Ron Popiel product. We have one we inherited from my mother-in-law. It must be 40 or 50 years old. We don’t use it, it sits on a display shelf with other old kitchen gadgets.

I think that wsa meant to be a Nut Chopper. If you got to rough in pushing the blade the jar broke.

A Veg-a-matic was a plastic device made very simular but with the bottom open. You sat it over what you wanted to chop and slapped the top pad and the blade chopped the nuts, veggies or even cooked meats, like Spam, They sell one on TV now the come apart more for easier cleaning.

At a county fair once I got tossed out when the guy demonstrating Veg a Matics went on break. I took one from the case of ones he was selling and tried to do as he did. I mashed the tomatoes, got potatoes stuck on the blades and the push pad popped off and the spring went who knows where. The guy came back and had me tossed from the fair even though I sold ten of the things to the crowd that had gathered. I guess they needed a gag gift for a birthday or something
