Get Snack Savvy (Diabetes)

When you think of snacks, you probably think of greasy potato chips or a bag of cookies. In fact, snacks can be a very important part of your meal plan, as long as you focus on healthy foods and avoid the junk.
Snacking can help you avoid hunger and can fit very comfortably into your diabetes management plan. However, snacks must be factored into your total meal plan for the day. Don’t overdo it with snacks just as you wouldn’t with your regular meals. Try to eat snacks at the same time each day. Ask yourself what time of day you usually get hungry — mid-morning, mid-afternoon, evening, all the time? Choosing healthy snacks may get you through the day without overeating.

Remember, healthy snacks do not have to be “fat free.” If eaten in moderation, fat is an important source of energy. Talk with your diabetes care team to help you choose snacks that you enjoy, that also work with your meal plan.
