Glucose: Just Another Carb ( Diabetes )

One of the most persistent myths about diabetes is that people who have it can’t eat glucose. Twenty years of research have shown, however, that sugar is just another carbohydrate, and that it’s safe to eat.
A brownie and a baked potato have about the same effect on your blood glucose. Your body turns the carbohydrates in grains, beans, fruit, milk, or sweets into glucose. Then, your body uses the glucose for fuel. Carbohydrates such as potatoes and bread raise blood glucose in the same manner as table sugar. Don’t focus on the sugar; focus on the total amount of carbohydrate in the meal.

That doesn’t mean, however, that you can load up on sugary snacks. Table sugar is full of “empty calories,” meaning that it contains no vitamins or minerals. If you want a natural sugar that is packaged with vitamins and minerals, choose a piece of fresh fruit instead! If you want to eat a sweet dessert, try to eat only two or three bites. Then, you can trade the carbohydrate in those bites of brownie or cake for a piece of bread or a serving of rice in your meal plan.
