Boiled custard and this cookie are wonderful together.

Helen Well’s Holiday Fruit Cookies

These are a favorite of our household and the only way some of us will eat candied fruit.
Miss Helen was a close friend of my parents.

2 cup of softened shortening
2 cups brown sugar well packed
2 eggs
½ cup buttermilk
3 ½ cups of sifted flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon of salt
1 ½ cups of broken pecans
2 cups halved candied cherries (red & green)
2 cups of cut up dates

Mix well shortening, brown sugar, and eggs. Add buttermilk. Sift flour, soda, salt and stir in.

Mix in pecans, cherries and dates. Chill before baking.

Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Drop with a teaspoon 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet. Flatten down with a fork. Bake 7 – 10 minutes.

NOTE: Watch closely and do not over cook. It is best for them to cook slowly. I have put aluminum foil on my bottom shelf so the bottoms don’t brown and burn.
