Insulin on the Road (Diabetes)

Taking a trip? If you’re traveling across several time zones, it might be difficult to maintain your usual insulin schedule while you’re en route. Here’s one strategy for managing the time change: The easiest approach is to omit your intermediate- or long-acting insulin on the morning of the trip and rely on regular insulin to keep your blood glucose normal. You will have to test your blood glucose frequently (every four hours) and take regular insulin frequently (every four hours, adjusting the insulin dose to your blood glucose level). When you arrive at your destination and change your watch to the new time zone, go back on your usual insulin and meal schedule.
