Birth control pills are a safe option, even if you have diabetes. There is some controversy, however, among diabetes specialists about which form of birth control is best for you. In some circumstances, birth control pills, which contain estrogen, may affect your blood glucose and blood cholesterol levels. For this reason, some physicians are reluctant to prescribe them for women with diabetes. Studies have shown, however, that blood glucose, blood cholesterol, and blood lipid levels are the same in women who take birth control pills and in those who do not.

f you are concerned, talk to your health care team. There are other effective birth control methods, such as a diaphragm, that will not affect blood glucose at all. You and your care team can determine which method is best for you.
