Make Healthier Meat Choices (Heart Health)

If you’ve decided to cut the fat and excess calories out of your diet, you don’t have to stop eating meat entirely. Just remember to choose lean cuts and trim away any excess fat.

Instead of choosing:

Cold cuts or lunch meats like bologna, salami, or liverwurst
Regular hot dogs
Bacon or sausage
Regular ground beef
Chicken or turkey with skin; duck, or goose
Oil-packed tuna
Beef (chuck, rib, brisket)
Pork (spareribs, untrimmed loin)
Frozen breaded fish or fried fish
Whole eggs
Chorizo sausage

Try these instead:

Low-fat cold cuts, which are often 95 to 97 percent fat-free
Low-fat hot dogs
Canadian bacon or lean ham
Extra-lean ground beef such as ground round or ground turkey
Chicken or turkey, white meat without skin
Water-packed tuna
Beef, trimmed of external fat (round, loin)
Pork tenderloin or lean smoked ham
Fish or shellfish, unbreaded
Egg whites or egg substitutes
Turkey or vegetarian sausage
