More Reasons to Eat Breakfast

If the knowledge that eating breakfast can open the door to a healthier life isn’t enough to get you out of bed a few minutes earlier, consider this: numerous studies have demonstrated that eating breakfast improves concentration, problem-solving ability, memory, and mood. School districts around the country have implemented breakfast programs, including free or reduced-price breakfasts for low-income students, because the evidence overwhelmingly indicates that students perform better when they’ve had a healthy breakfast.

The benefits of a good breakfast aren’t just related to better grades, however. Athletes or people engaging regularly in physical activity find that breakfast not only gives them the energy they need to get through a tough workout, but also that it improves their performance. Morning levels of stored glycogen, a carbohydrate that readily converts to energy-producing glucose, are about half what they are at night. Endurance athletes who miss breakfast, therefore, will find themselves running out of steam far earlier than those who eat something an hour or two before their workout.
