Pat Nixon’s California Date Nut Bread from 1955

1 lb package dates
1 1/2 cups boiling water
2 tsp baking soda
1 Tbsp butter
1 egg
1 3/4 cups sugar
2 3/4 cups flour
1 cup chopped nuts
1 tsp vanilla

Add soda to boiling water and pour over dates,
which have been cut into small pieces. Let this mixture stand.

Cream butter and sugar. Then add egg. Strain water from first mixture into sugar mixture. Add the flour and beat well. Add the dates, nuts and vanilla.

Pour into greased loaf pans.

Bake in 350 degree oven for one hour.

This is such a yummy recipe! One of my family’s favorites during Christmas and New Year celebrations.

I love date bread. One of our neighbors made it many years ago & it was fabulous. She’d bake it in an orange juice can, back when OJ cans were made of metal & it would come out as a nice round loaf. We kept begging for the recipe but she wouldn’t share it as it was her special treat for everyone. Thanks for posting. it was always so moist.
