Q. What Do Vegans Eat?

If you’re thinking about a switch to a vegan diet, or if you know someone who wants to eat vegan, this handy list will help you learn more about the foods and ingredients that vegans do and don’t eat.

A vegan diet consists entirely of non-animal-based foods:

vegetables (including sea vegetables/seaweed) fruits
legumes (beans, peas, lentils)
grains (wheat, rice, oats, barley, rye, spelt, etc.)
seeds (sesame, flax, pumpkin, sunflower, etc.)
nuts (walnuts, pecans, almonds, cashews, peanuts, etc.)
soy products and meat/dairy alternatives (tofu, tempeh, seitan/wheat gluten, soy milk, soy yogurt, etc.)
Vegans avoid all animal-based ingredients:
red meat (beef, lamb, pork, etc.)
poultry (chicken, turkey, etc.)
fish and seafood
honey
eggs
dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, etc.)
foods with ingredients (such as casein, whey, rennet, gelatin, etc.) derived from animal sources
processed foods which, although not derived from animals, may use animal products in their processing (white sugar, beer and wine, vinegar, etc.)
