Remember Shakey's Pizza - about 40 years ago?

Anyone remember Shakey’s Pizza? Would love to have a pepperoni recipe similar to theirs. It was their crust and seems like their cheese that was a little different.

During the 1960’s, pizza went thru major changes.
Pizza Shop’s use to make a pool of sauce on the dough (which gave the top of the crust a ‘dumpling’ texture as it cooked), and then the once OH SO GOOEY cheese, was placed in small mounds to melt in unconnected pools.
Well, these were so often scorching lips and chins as the cheese would pull free and droop down.
Thus now, the sauce is condensed, and just painted on, and the cheese is spread in a layer, so as not to get gooey, which as KW said, no longer can be so gooey.
Alas, I’d think in todays market, a gooey pizza could be sued if someone got burned.

thanks guys! I wish I had a shakey’s pizza even if it did burn my tongue and chin. And it got burnt every time! But it was still good.

there’s still a shakey’s in tokyo. it’s all you can eat and japanese-italian style. i liked it, but it’s definitely nothing like you guys are describing. however i have had pizza where they did it in the glob style, but it came out terrible. i think the cheese quality was crap and it didn’t have enough time in the oven.

I like the cheese from Wisconsin, especially if I can pick it up at the creamery store. And make my own crust with wheat and unbleached flour and yeast from the Mennonite “stores”. I like to make my own spaghetti sauce in the crockpot and use it as the sauce. I know it’s probably not like Shakey’s, barely remember them, but what’s better than homemade anyway.
