SOS Creamed Beef Recipe

If you were in the military you know what this is. It really should have dried beef but ground beef works just as well.

1 pound ground beef
1 small onion, chopped
1/2 cup butter
2 cups whole milk
1/2 cup flour
Kosher salt and pepper, to taste
Bread, toasted

Brown ground beef and onion in skillet and drain. Set aside.

In same pan melt butter and add flour to make a roux. Stir until smooth.

Add milk and stir until thick.

Add cooked beef and onion and stir to combine. Add salt and pepper to taste. Pour over prepared toast and enjoy!

How well I remember going to the chow hall and quickly turning on my heels and going to the snack bar for so edible food. LOL I know lots of guys loved it. Not me.

I liked it, and I still enjoy it occasionally. It is not something I would want often. For those who never experienced this SOS stands for Sh*t on a Single. Funny how soldiers come up with names.

Here are some comments from the site where I found the recipe.

My dad was in the Marines, and made this all the time. One of my favorite meals, he would add some soy sauce for flavor and color. Even better when served with a side dish of fried diced potatoes and a fried egg.

Was a messhall cook in the Army in the early 80s.
I cooked for 300 soldiers everyday.
SOS was always the first thing we ran out of at breakfast.
— We always added a little nutmeg to spice it up a bit.

“Sh*t on a Single.” That says it all. LOL
