For the best blood glucose control, check your levels immediately after you wake up. Do this before you do any of your regular morning activities, like showering, shaving, or putting on makeup. If you start the day with a normal blood glucose level before breakfast, keeping your blood glucose under control throughout the day is much easier.

If you check your blood glucose levels first thing in the morning and they’re low, you can drink some juice or milk. If they’re high, you can take insulin immediately and wait for it to work before you eat breakfast. Monitoring your glucose immediately on awakening does not take a major change in lifestyle, but it is very effective in improving your blood glucose control.
