Swedish "Skomakarlåda"

This is a classic Swedish dish called “Skomakarlåda” or “Shoemaker’s box”

800 g potatoes
1-2 cups milk
2 tablespoons butter
1-2 package bacon
600-700 g sirloin steak
1 cup water
1 tablespoon of concentrated veal stock
freshly ground black pepper
fresh parsley

  1. Take out the meat if it is in the refrigerator.
  2. Peel potatoes and cut into smaller pieces.
  3. Boil the potatoes in salted water.
  4. Drain and mash the potatoes.
  5. Melt butter, add milk and heat. Pour the mixture over the mashed potatoes whisk until fluffy.
  6. Season with salt and pepper.
  7. Shred the bacon and fry in a little over medium heat, add salt and pepper.
  8. Take up and drain on paper towels.
  9. Fry the steaks then about 2-3 minutes per side.
  10. Lift them up and place on a heated plate.
  11. Whip out pan with water and veal stock into a gravy.
  12. Serve the steaks on top of mashed potatoes and top with grilled smoked ham and a little gravy. Garnish with fresh parsley.
