Ups and Downs With Ultralente ( Diabetes )
If you’ve just switched to ultralente insulin, you may notice that your blood glucose levels vary considerably. Here’s one possible reason: You may not be getting the same concentration of insulin crystals into the syringe each time. When patients begin using ultralente insulin, they often overlook one basic instruction — the one that tells them how to mix the crystals correctly.
After you rock the bottle between your palms, you must immediately draw the dose. If you wait, or set the bottle down and draw your regular insulin first, the ultralente insulin crystals will quickly settle back to the bottom of the bottle. In this case, the amount of insulin in the dose may be very different than you planned.
