This is a recipe my husband’s great-grandmother made for her family during the great depression. Sweets were often few and far between, so when nothing else was available she made this recipe.
2 C. water
3/4 C. sugar
3 T. flour
1/4 C. vinegar
1 T. butter
Mix sugar, flour and salt in a small saucepan. Gradually add water, vinegar and butter.
Heat mixture until it comes to a boil, stirring constantly. Cook until mixture becomes gelled.
Serve hot over biscuits or toast.
