Aloo matar (Green Peas Potato)

Aloo matar is a veg dish that is very easy to prepare and quite healthy. This is a very generic veg dish that can had with almost any main dish like roti, rice or paratha. This dish is not spicy yet tastes just as good as any other rich items.

Cooking time: 20 mins

Steps

  1. Cut 2 potatoes into small cube pieces, wash it and keep aside. Also chop 1 tomato and keep aside.

  2. Put 2-3 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a non-stick cooking bowl, after 2mins put panchporan (a mixture of 5 spices) ,1 sukhha mircha (whole dry red chilli), 2 teez patta (Bay leaves) and drop the potato cubes (Step 1)

  3. Add 1 tablespoon turmeric powder and salt to taste.

  4. Fry the mixture for 5-7 minutes.

  5. Add 0.5 teaspoon garlic paste and chopped tomato (Step 1). Also add 0.5 teaspoon of red chilli powder.

  6. Add 2-3 green chillis as per taste.

  7. Finally add a handful of green peas and fry for 2minutes.

  8. Add water and boil till the gravy is thick paste and the potato/tomato/peas are fully cooked.

The aloo matar is ready to serve with roti or paratha.

I looked on the net to find out what spices make up panchporan and found that it is a mixture of equal parts of cumin seed (jeera), nigella seed (kalo jira), mustard seed (rai or shorshe), fennel seed (mouri), and cumin seed (jeera).

Glad to help when I can.
