Brownie Pudding from 1946

1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 Tbsp shortening, melted (or cooking oil)
1/2 to 3/4 cup walnut meats, chopped
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/2 cups hot water

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, granulated sugar and 2 Tbsp cocoa powder.
Add milk, vanilla and shortening: mix until smooth.
Add chopped nut meats.
Pour into greased 2-quart casserole.
Mix brown sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa powder and sprinkle over batter in casserole.
Pour hot water over entire batter in casserole.
Place immediately into a moderate oven, 350 degees F, bake for 40 to 45 minutes.
It makes its own fudge sauce. Bottom of brownie will be like pudding.
Delicious served with whipped cream.

Makes about 4 cups.
