Get Back Into Your Routine ( Diabetes )

Diabetes complications can seriously hinder your daily routine, especially if you have poor vision, arthritis, or you’ve had an amputation. You can, however, get help. Ask your doctor for a referral to an occupational therapist. Don’t let the name fool you — an occupational therapist isn’t someone who just helps you with challenges at your job.

Physical therapy can increase your strength and mobility through training, which often takes place in your home. It can teach you better ways to deal with a variety of physical ailments.

If you’ve had an amputation, you’ll need to learn to do things differently to prevent further injury to your leg, and also to the rest of your body. You may need to learn to use a cane or a wheelchair, or to grab bars to navigate around the bathroom. The therapist can even do a survey of your home and suggest adjustments that will make things easier for you. Don’t deal with complications alone. There is help available, if you ask your physician.
