Gingerbread Waffles

Gingerbread Waffles

1 cup molasses
5 Tablespoons shortening
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 cup sour milk
1 egg
2 cups pastry flour
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder

Mix and sift last four dry ingredients three times.
Heat molasses and shortening to the boiling point.
Remove from heat and beat in baking soda.
Add sour milk and egg well beaten.
Mix well and add dry ingredients.
Stir until smooth and bake in a hot waffle iron.
Serve hot with whipped cream lightly sweetened and flavored with vanilla.
