Is Low-Protein Right for You? ( Diabetes )

Protein can be good for your health, but most Americans already get more protein than they need. If 10 percent of your diet is protein, this is usually enough for your body’s needs. Too much protein can damage your kidneys and eventually contribute to kidney failure. The best way to prevent kidney damage is to keep your glucose levels as close to normal as you can, keep your blood pressure low, and eat a low-protein diet.
Protein is found in many foods but is particularly high in meats, dairy products, poultry, and eggs. Cutting down on protein has been shown to slow damage to kidney function in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Discuss with your diabetes care team what your kidney filtration rate is and whether a low-protein diet would be good for your kidney’s health.
