Kenney's Broiled Burgers Special Sauce

This Burger Chain owned by William “Bill” Kenney was popular from the 50’s – 80’s. They had a wonderful sauce on them so no one wanted mustard or ketchup. For 15 cents per burger you could eat like a king. I didn’t think it was a BBQ sauce but I’ve been told that it was indeed BBQ. Oh well, they were delicious. I have several recipes by Mr. Kenney (Dirty Rice, Meatloaf, Creole Sauce, Pork Chops, Chicken, Shrimp Dip, Smoked Sausages, Fish Dinner, etc.) but need the recipe for his “sauce”… Someone suggested using 1000 Island dressing, NO-NO-NO and Wrong.
Does anyone out there remember this “eatery” and most important - does anyone have his special sauce recipe? I will gladly share my recipes with anyone who can come up with the original recipe. Many thanks in advance!!

I loved Kenney burgers from Roanoke when I was a kid. I tried making it with mixing ketchup AND Wendy’s BBQ sauce (becuase I didn’t like it with the hickory that I had - I had some packs from Wendys.) I added pickle relish a drop or 2 - not much, of Worchester. Wasn’t sure if there were any bits of onion in the sauce, but I tried both ways. I simmered it for 20 mins to incorporate the flavors. I did add a bit of water because it thickened a little. Dipped my burger (pre-made frozen patties from grocery) in the sauce. Try w/soft plain or soft seseme-seed bun. Bill grilled his burger & still sells the sauce. OUT OF HIS STORE! aND DONATES HIS PROFITS to Habitats for Humanity!!! Great Man! Google search Bill Kenney - the best web-site was the one w/ WDBJ-7 TV channel out of Roanoke that interviewed him last week (3-11-09). Hope this helped. Patty
