  • 2 white fish fillets (such as cod or tilapia)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 4 sandwich buns
  • Lettuce leaves
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Sliced pickles
  • Tartar sauce

Rinse and pat dry the fish fillets, cutting them to fit the buns if needed. Mix flour, cornmeal, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper in a shallow dish. Pour buttermilk into another dish. Dip the fish fillets in buttermilk, then coat them in the flour mixture.

Heat about an inch of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat to 350°F (175°C). Fry the fish fillets for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.

Toast the buns lightly. Spread tartar sauce on the bottom halves, then add lettuce, tomato, and pickles. Place the crispy fish fillet on top, cover with the top bun, and serve immediately with your favorite sides.
