Maple Meltaways

2 cups flour
1 cup margarine, softened
3/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 t. maple flavoring (extract)
1/4 t. salt
About 2/3 cup pecan halves

About 1 1/4 hours before serving, or up to 2 weeks ahead:
In large bowl, measure flour, softened margarine, sugar, maple extract, and salt. With mixer at low speed, beat ingredients until blended. Occasionally scrape bowl with spatula. Increase speed to medium. Beat until light and fluffy.

Preheat oven to 350. Drop dough by rounded t. about 1" apart onto ungreased cookie sheet. Gently press a pecan half into top of each cookie. Bake 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool cookies slightly on cookie sheet, then with pancake turner carefully loosen cookies and remove to wire rack to cool completely. Repeat with remaining dough and pecans. Store cookies in tightly covered container to use up within 2 weeks.

Makes about 4 dozen.
