Prevent Early-Morning Lows ( Diabetes )
Studies have shown that 50 percent of severe low blood glucoses happen between midnight and 8 a.m. Having a normal blood glucose level before you go to sleep does not guarantee that it won’t drop a few hours later, especially if you use intensified insulin treatments, such as nighttime NPH.
Test your blood glucose level and have a snack before bed to prevent low blood glucose before 8 a.m. If you experience nighttime low blood glucoses often, set your alarm and check your blood glucose level at 3 a.m. I your level is below 75 mg/dl, eat something. Ask your health care provider whether a slow-release carbohydrate snack bar, would be a good nighttime snack for you.
